It’s pretty easy to confuse a Sheltie with a Border Colie. While the two breeds look similar, if you pay close attention, you will notice that they are not the same size. The Border Collie is a medium-sized dog, whereas the Sheltie is pretty tiny in size.

Let’s take a close look at some of the differences between the two dogs:

1. Physical and Personality Differences

1. Physical and Personality Differences

The most notable difference between Shelti and Border Collie is size. For instance, a female Border Collie is 22 to 24 inches long at the shoulders, while a male Collie is 24 to 26 long.

A normal Shelti will be 13 to 16 inches at the shoulders. When you weigh them, they will differ as well. A shelti will weigh roughly 15 and 25 pounds, while a Border Collie will weigh 50 to 65 pounds for females and 60 to 75 pounds for males.

2. How does the temperament of Shelti and Border Collie differ?

How does the temperament of Shelti and Border Collie differ

The temperament of both dogs differs. The Border Collie is a sheepherder and seems exceptionally good at that. It is also quieter and not as vicious as the Shelti.

In comparison, a Shelti is more than a sheepherder; initially, groomers bred the Shelti to protect the farm. So if you are looking for a dog that can raise hell, you should consider the Shelti. That said, both dogs are great to have.

3. Training

The Border Collie and the Sheltie are trainable, although their level of intelligence is not the same. The Border Collie is the less intelligent dog among the two.

If you are a first-time dog owner, you wouldn’t mind training the two as they are obedient and agile. The most crucial thing you should keep in mind is socializing your dogs with other dogs from a young age. If you struggle to train any of the two breeds, take them to your local dog breeder.

4. Dedicated Companions

Dedicated Companions

If you are looking for a dedicated companion, you will never go wrong with a Shelti or Border Collie. With proper training and grooming, they can become loyal, intelligent, and agile.

5. Which dog is better between Shelti and the Border Collie?

Both dogs are great, but the Shelti is the most intelligent and protective, whereas the Border Collie is the most curious.  It is also the most intuitive, gentle, and affectionate dog you can have.
